Photographs, 1939-1994

This series is comprised of still photographs and is divided into three subseries by format: prints, 35mm slides, and negatives. The photographs cover a wide range of subjects, including the American black bears considered the living symbols of Smokey Bear and his family, which were housed at the Smithsonian's National Zoo. Other subjects covered include appearances of the costumed Smokey Bear mascot at various events; Smokey Bear-themed exhibits, displays, and parade floats; celebrities who participated in fire prevention campaigns; CFFP annual meetings, events, and award presentations; Rudy Wendelin and his artwork; various U.S. Forest Service and CFFP campaign personnel; and fire prevention posters, signs, and promotional products. There are also a few photographs of wildfire scenes, firefighting, fire damage, and various forest locations.
