Mixed Media and Press, 1946-2010

 Series

Scope and Contents

This series is comprised of audiovisual and related ephemera. It is divided into 3 subseries by content type and format: motion pictures, audio recordings, and press kits. The motion pictures subseries encompasses most audiovisual media in this collection and is separated by physical format: film reels, VHS, and U-Matics. Most film reels in this subseries have been previously digitized and include TV PSAs, “The Smokey Bear Show” TV segments, and related Smokey Bear TV content. VHS and U-Matic tapes in this subseries include Smokey Bear TV spots, interview footage, sports and celebrity collaborations, training videos, and Smokey Bear Ad Council PSAs. Audio recordings are similarly divided by physical format: tape reels (audio-only 16mm, 32mm, and cassette) and vinyl records. Content in this subseries is composed of songs, segments, and celebrity content intended for radio broadcasting with a smaller selection of audio content intended for household use.

The third subseries, Press Kits, encompasses all complete press and/or media kits in this collection. Kits include original packaging and letters to broadcasters, guidelines for use and licensing, as well as related promotional content such as image prints, quality control references, and small standees. Since these materials are grouped by original order and accessioned as multi-component single items, several titles may also be available in the Motion Pictures subseries. However, any duplicates listed within this subseries refer to separate physical items alongside any attached or enclosed ephemera. Additionally, non-A/V-based press kits for print media and script-only radio kits are included in the Special Release and Multi-Format subseries.
