Scope and Contents

This album shows shots of a number of turkey breeds including Wild Turkeys, Black Turkey, Bourbon Red Turkey, Bronze Turkey, Narragansett, White Holland, and Virginia Wild Turkey. Also included are flocks in different locales and the development of commercial turkey-growing and marketing in Virginia, Texas, New York, New Mexico, Kentucky, and California during the early 20th century. Photographs of fences, feeding, watering, breeding flock, roosting, laying house, hen nests, coops, showing anti-flight paddle, dressing and sticking turkey, Turkey Day, and turkeys on sale are included. Some of the images were used in the production of Turkey Raising, USDA Farmers Bulletin, #791 in 1917 and its replacement #1409 in 1924.
