Series III is comprised of diversely formatted 4-H materials. It includes photographs, publications, correspondence and articles on boys' and girls' club work from 1915 through 1917, Extension Subcommittee on 4-H Club Work reports, impact studies and bibliographies, and Youth Staff Development and Training intern reports. It contains 4-H sheet music, 33.3 RPM records of radio spots, 4-H club songs on 78 RPM records, and National 4-H Week kits and posters. The sheet music is arranged chronologically. However, songs published the same date are arranged alphabetically by the composer or lyricist's name. Songs published by the same composer or lyricist the same year are arranged alphabetically by title of the song. The National 4-H Leader O.H. Benson's personal file in which the items are not sorted by date or subject was divided into 27 folders in order to maintain the original arrangement. All other dated materials are arranged chronologically. Many of the photographs are not dated and so are arranged by decades based on best estimates. The one poster that is not dated has been placed at the end of the poster collection.

Additional Description

Abstract

A family stands at a farm gate with "4-H Member" and "4-H Leader" signs on their fence. Pieces of board on the ground, plus a saw standing by the fence and a hammer in the boy’s hand indicate that he’s just finished hanging the signs.

Custodial History

The painting hung in the sales area on the third floor of J. C. Penney Hall from 2005 to 2016. It was later part of an exhibit of original 4-H art in the Heritage Hallway, J. C. Penney Hall, National 4-H Conference Center. The design was selected as one of six by delegates to the 2014 NAE4-HA Conference to appear on set of historic 4-H post cards to be sold by National 4-H Supply Service in 2016.

Dimensions

Acrlyic or tempera on board, 25-1/4 x 20-1/4 inches. Original wooden frame cleaned and restored through donation of Nancy Wills, National 4-H Fellow and retired staff member.

1956 National 4-H Calendar Art by Brown & Bigelow. The company offered a variety of calendars, all with the same image: a large version for school and business hang-up calendar with an attached monthly pad in three sizes (11 x 22-3/4 inches, 16 x 33 inches, and 22 x 45-1/2 inches); an Art Mount wall calendar wtih the image affixed to the back board and a monthly pad below; a 4-H record calendar; and a Memory Calendar.
