Biographical Sketch
Clifford D. Carpenter (1897-1965) received a doctorate degree in veterinary medicine from Cornell University in 1920. He served as a researcher at the University of California’s Avian Pathology Laboratory for three years. In 1923, he established the first private poultry veterinary practice in the United States. He sold the practice in 1935 to Lederle Laboratories, and became the director of the company’s first poultry division. He left in 1938 to pursue graduate study in poultry pathology and genetics at the University of Kentucky. From 1939 to 1944, he worked for Allied Mills and served with the U.S. War Food Administration to develop poultry expansion projects during World War II. From 1944 to 1958, Carpenter was president of the Institute of American Poultry Industries, a trade association dedicated to poultry and egg processing and marketing concerns. He served as a delegate and chairman of the U.S. participation committees to the 9th, 11th, and 12th World's Poultry Congresses. In 1968, he was elected to the American Poultry Historical Society Poultry Hall of Fame.
