Content Description

The Harlan Loy Shrader Collection contains materials collected by Shrader while he served as a senior extension poultry husbandman from 1926 to 1959. The materials include reports, articles, newsletters, clippings, photographs, booklets, correspondence, items from various poultry extension services, a metal model of everted baby chick vents, and other items. Some of the materials pertain to the American Poultry Historical Society. There are also materials related to the Chicken of Tomorrow contest.

Biographical Sketch

H. L. (Harlan Loy) Shrader (1889-1970) received his B.S. and M.S. from the University of Missouri in 1914 and 1925, respectively. Shrader was an investigator in poultry and egg handling with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food Research Laboratory from 1914 to 1917. He served as a pilot in the 11th Aero Squadron, American Expeditionary Forces (AEF), from 1917 to 1919. From 1920 to 1926, he was an extension poultry scientist in Missouri. In 1926, he became a senior extension poultry husbandman with the Federal Extension Service. He retired from this position in 1959. Shrader was a charter member of the National Chicken of Tomorrow Contest Committee. He authored or co-authored over 200 articles, radio talks, and speeches related to the poultry industry. He was a member of the Poultry Science Association; he served on its Board of Directors from 1927 to 1932, and was its president from 1929 to 1930. In addition, he was a member of Epsilon Sigma Phi, the World's Poultry Science Association, the American Legion, the AF&A Masons, and the Farm House and Acacia fraternities.
