Content Description
The Israel McLaughlin Account Book and Papers contain handwritten examples and practice pages of mathematical computations. There are several pages listing loans due to Israel McLaughlin (1853-1855, 1857-1858, 1868, and 1871-1872). One page has newspaper clippings of household remedies for illnesses. The account book also contains loose documents, most of which are land deeds for property owned by Robert J. Stringfellow in Cheatham County, Tennessee. Other names mentioned include the Pack and Harris families. There is a business card of John O'Neill, Solicitor of Claims, Washington D.C., and an envelope with a return address of T.R. Dickson, Country Court Clerk, Charlotte, Tennessee. The collection includes an 1862 bill of sale for four slaves.
The mathematical practice pages include labeled exercises, including "Single Rule of Three", "Double Rule of Three", "Compound Interest", "Insurance Commission and Brokerage", "Discount", "Barter", "Loss and Gain", and "Domestic Exchange."
