Content Description

The John B. Carpenter Papers include materials relating to Carpenter's project in the 1950s to create a subject index of Miles Joseph Berkeley's papers on Vegetable Pathology (1854-1857). The collection contains one bound volume, which includes the Vegetable Pathology papers, extracted by Carpenter in 1945 from the Gardener's Chronicle. There are ten pieces of correspondence between Carpenter and J. G. Dickson regarding Carpenter's index. Also included are two copies of the completed index and one small binder containing the article "Observations, Botanical and Physiological, on the Potato Murrain" by Miles Joseph Berkeley.

Biographical Sketch

John B. Carpenter was born in 1915 and worked as a senior plant pathologist for the USDA Rubber Disease Investigation in La Hulera, Turrialba, Costa Rica in the 1950s. He later became a senior plant pathologist in Indio, California. In the 1980s, Carpenter served as a cooperative extension specialist and professor emeritus at the University of California, Riverside.
