Biographical Sketch
John W. Mitchell (1905-1992) studied botany at the University of Chicago under Ezra Jacob Kraus. He became a senior plant physiologist at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) in 1938. In the 1940s, Mitchell conducted research with Kraus and colleagues at the USDA on the agricultural use of the synthetic plant growth regulator 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) as a selective herbicide. After retirement, Mitchell devoted his time to the study and photography of ferns in the Mid-Atlantic United States.
