Organizational History
The Front Royal Remount Depot was opened on August 30, 1911 to serve as the U.S. Army's east coast remount station. It consisted of 5,000 acres adjacent to the Blue Ridge Mountains, south and slightly east of the town of Front Royal, Virginia. The depot was located near the railroad, which facilitated transport of animals arriving at the depot and those transferred from the depot to Fort Myer, Virginia, and other locations. When the remount service was deactivated in 1948, all remount depot properties reverted to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The Front Royal site currently houses programs operated by the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute.
