Cooperative Forest Fire Prevention people, 1961-1971
Scope and Contents
This subseries consists of approximately 1,675 35mm slides (including duplicates) showing the people, animals, places, events, and activities related to Smokey Bear and the Cooperative Forest Fire Prevention (CFFP) campaign. Most are color slides, but there are also many black and white images. The slides are housed in protective sleeves and grouped broadly by subject matter.
Subjects include the living bears, Smokey, Goldie, and Little Smokey, at the National Zoo; the costumed Smokey mascot at various events; fire prevention posters and other promotional materials; CFFP programs and personnel; Smokey-themed parade floats, displays, and exhibits; television, sports, and celebrity appearances; and artist Rudy Wendelin. A few slide presentation scripts and other supporting documents are also included. Of note is a Smokey Bear 40th Birthday booklet containing the 1984 commemorative U.S. postage stamp designed by Rudy Wendelin, marked with the first day of issue cancellation and autographed by Wendelin.
