Content Description

The Julien N. Friant Papers include Friant's correspondence with many U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) officials, such as Henry A. Wallace, Paul Appleby, Chester Davis, and Rex Tugwell. There is also substantial correspondence with James Farley and others. The material covers activities related to personnel work of the USDA, the Franklin D. Biographical Sketch

Julien N. Friant (1887-1939) served as a special assistant to Secretary of Agriculture Henry A. Wallace from 1933 to 1939. An advocate for national assistance to farmers, Friant was instrumental in developing a successful program of patronage within the USDA. His duties involved the review and recommendation of thousands of qualified applicants for jobs under the New Deal.
