Organizational History

The Farmers Home Administration (FmHA) was established in 1946 by an act of the U.S. Congress. It merged the functions of the Farm Security Administration and the Emergency Crop and Feed Loan Division of the Farm Credit Administration. The mission of the FmHA was to provide insured government loans to farmers who were unable to secure credit by other means. The loans could be used for purchasing or repairing farm property. The FmHA continued programs to liquidate older projects and programs, and it also continued the tenant-purchase program from the Bankhead-Jones Act of 1937. Upon the USDA reorganization of 1953, the FmHA became part of the Agricultural Credit Group.
